David kini adalah dosen senior di the Centre for Ideas at the Victorian College for the Arts di Melbourne, Australia.

English:

‘The medium of electronic collage has as its history, roots in the mythologies of the cultures it has emerged from. The attitudes, beliefs and actions of the artists and the artist’s connection to their political, social and economic environment is directly born from the cultural mythologies that lie at the center of the current issues with new technology and new art forms. This talk will trace the differences in the western and eastern traditions and apply them to a history of remaking, re-using, collaging and sampling existing and found material as a medium of cultural expressive work. The issues surrounding these differences are explored and applied to spiritual issues, attitudes towards technology, ownership of material, and current collage work of my own in music and the work of others in different electronic mediums. The stories at the heart of these seemingly modern issues have much deeper roots and continue to drive work into the 21st century, as the connections between east and west increase and the ancient and modern, electronic and natural worlds communicate.’

David Shea
An unique and fascinating talk on sampling and appropriation from a proponent of sample culture David Shea. David will guide participants through his approach to using appropriated material within the larger context of the philosophical and theoretical issues surrounding the world of remixing; and its place within the framework and history of art from Duchamp to DJ culture

David is currently senior lecturer at the Centre for Ideas at the Victorian College for the Arts in Melbourne, Australia.

Workshop 1: Lasers & Sound Oscillators using MAX/MSP

– Website

Workshop 2: Pd Basic for Multimedia
oleh The House Of Natural Fiber [ID] – Website

Robin Fox has been making and performing audio-visual works worldwide for the last 7 years. His works range from two-dimensional film works where sound makes geometric light patterns to three-dimensional laser works where the audience stands inside a visual sound. His solo works have featured recently at the Vancouver New Music festival, the Fri Resonans Festival in Trondheim, Norway and the Mois Multi festival in Quebec City. His works also exist in photographic form. He works extensively with Dance companies in Australia making stage designs from both sound and light functioning together.

In this workshop Fox will describe and demonstrate his techniques for turning sound into image. Anyone who has access to a computer and Max/MSP or PD can join in, but even if you don’t you can learn how his system works. Some step-by-step audio and visual programming basics will bring simple but effective interactive results.

COBRA Workshop
Sabtu, 5 February, 14.00 WIB
Jogja National Museum
Jl. Amri Yahya No.1,
Yogyakarta

This open workshop will focus on the system of COBRA a musical game piece that was created in the early 80’s by New York musician John Zorn. It will be taught by David Shea who was at one stage an original member of COBRA, frequently having played the game with the other musicians that have made it a highly respected and world reknowned improvisational musical system. The workshop is open to the public but will be specifically taught to the invited musicians involved in the COBRA MIX AND MATCH NIGHT. It will be performed after the workshop at 8pm Saturday 5 February Yogya National Museum.

The workshop will be taught by: David Shea and Oren Ambarchi

ABOUT COBRA
Cobra is an unpublished but recorded and frequently performed musical composition by John Zorn that was conceived as a system with very detailed rules but with no pre-conceived sequence of events, or game piece, for a group of musical improvisors and a prompter. Zorn completed Cobra on October 9, 1984. The composition consists of a set of cues notated on cards, and rules corresponding to the cues that direct the players what to do. The number of players, instrumentation, and length of the piece is indeterminate. Because there is no traditional musical notation and the players improvise, the piece may sound radically different from performance to performance.

As was commented upon in some length in a 2004 interview, Zorn has, with his own words, “deliberately chosen not to publish (or even write down) the rules” to his game pieces, being concerned with the importance of personal instruction.[4] Despite this, photocopies circulate among musicians internationally, and there is even a clean printing of all the cue categories in a CD booklet (see recordings). Reportase “Sound/Image/Image/Sound” dan “COBRA Mix and Match” oleh Indra Menus dan Wiman Rizkidarajat di EAR Magazine (Vol. 28, 2011)

Reportase TROPIS///SUBSONICS oleh Gina Xing di The Jakarta Post

Courtesy of Tropis///Subsonics When it comes to the creation of sound, there’s no limit to what can be done.

Starting today in Yogyakarta, the avant-garde music adventure Tropis///Subsonics aims to take audiences to a new musical sphere that breaks through their conventional ideas about music.

The one-week event, Tropis///Subsonics, draws musicians from across Australia and Indonesia to the thriving art scene of Yogyakarta to share different processes in sound experimentation, Kristi Monfries, the event organizer told The Jakarta Post recently.

The unconventional event hosts programs ranging from talks, workshops, performances showcasing different approaches to combining moving image and sound. One of the open workshops will focus on COBRA, a musical game piece created in the early 1980s by New York musician John Zorn.

Talks on the sampling and remixing culture will be conducted by well-respected musicians David Shea, Oren Ambarchi, Robbie Avenaim and Robin Fox who have come from Australia to meet local musicians.

Local artists Wukir, Rully Shabara, Sonyy Irawan were invited to present their work, which blends Indonesian traditional sound elements with modern technology.

Piano solo singer Frau Leilani will also be performing at the event, along with these edgy music adventurers. Leilani expressed her interests in collaborating with artists from all backgrounds and said this event would “enhance her ability to improvise”.

The event will do more than just provide an open platform for artists to collaborate and inspire each other.

“The word subsonics means a sub-frequency of sound that flies below the radar. So it reflects upon music that is not always accepted but exists in a way to effect change on a subtle level”, said Kristi.

“Experimentation in sound is not often seen in mainstream music but is often heavily borrowed from,” she added.

Ownership of intellectual property in Indonesian culture has been an ongoing issue. David Shea, a senior lecturer at the Victoria College of Arts in Melbourne will be discussing the issue in his talk. The well-respected sampling artist has stressed the dominating role of the new music genre in his previous speech.

“Attitudes toward technology, ownership of material and works of collage will continue to be the determinant of the direction of employment in 21st century,” said Shea.

On the other hand, many artists in the field of music experimentation struggle to gain recognition, for some even in the underground scene. Wok, co-host of the event, from internet music label company Yes No Club, pointed out that experimental music in the past had not been widely accepted or appreciated in this country.

“Experimental music events in Indonesia are very rare… we hope this event will inspire everyone attending the event to start a band with a new musical direction…For local artists it’s an opportunity to be known in the experimental music world,” explained Wok.

Local artists argue their music is mostly inspired by traditional culture.

As a fellow friend of experimental musician Wukir, Rully holds a fair deal of optimism for Wukir and his music’s future.

“Introducing ethnic experimental music to an ‘underground’ crowd, which is typically into progression and innovation, certainly can bring his name up to the surface,” said Rully.

Wukir, who created BambuWukir through his deep search of “ethnic experimental” music, explained collaboration with artists that are cultural wise and accepting, was important.

“I want someone who can appreciate my culture so we can learn from each other,” said Wukir.

He believes artists local governments or media don’t show appreciation for can be well received outside their country.

When asked what it was like being an experimental musician, Wukir humorosly put it this way: “It feels hot like sambal terasi [a spicy shrimp taste from East Java].” He went on to say: “I prefer the word experimental noise.”

Using a variety of instrument from modified drum kits, sampler-based works, computer-generated music, laser lights, fog machines and video projection, these highly experienced musicians will present a fascinating look at how sound can engage and converse with moving image.
