RESOUND is a documentary series that discuss the innovation spirit in the Jogja music scene. Jogja is the cultural center of Indonesia and an important subculture hub in Asia. Creativity is seeping into every corner of this city and Jogja’s underground music scene is especially active. Many of these experimental musicians don’t give a damn about mainstream and integrate this spirit into all aspects of their creations and life.

This short documentary series will capture five dimensions from within the scene, digging into what makes it tick!

Meet Mahamboro, an experimental music nerd, a sound explorer based in Jogja, Indonesia.

Inspired by the Javanese instrument siter, he turned a trash bin into a sound weapon.

Episode 2 – YES NO WAVE | A Free Music Model Against The Capitalistic World

Based in Jogja, Yes No Wave music is a legendary nonprofit music label which is responsible for some of the earliest releases of some of the biggest indie bands in Indonesia, such as Senyawa and White Shoes and The Couples Company.

YES NO WAVE releases all of its records for free.

Wok The Rock, the label owner, says: “In this capitalistic world, it is an experiment, a free music model for all music lovers.”

Episode 3 – Senyawa‘s Endeavors of Beyond Rock&Roll

During the shooting of RESOUND in Jogja, Subtropical Asia was fortunate enough to interview Senyawa. As a band they’ve become something of an national treasure in Indonesia. They combine the traditional music of Java with an experimental touch that sounds like the voices of angels and devils alike.

They have a fierce underground rock attitude, but during the process of composing and creating, they continuously go against convention. They are widely respected in experimental music scenes around the world, and local musicians in Jogja regard them as music pioneers and heroes.
